Music Hall Presents Complexions Contemporary Ballet Performing ‘Woke’

They’re back and better than ever.

Celebrating the return of dance to the stage, Complexions Contemporary Ballet will perform in Detroit on Saturday, July 31, at 8pm with a high-energy, finger-on-the-pulse performance that exemplifies the singular ability of the performing arts to capture and communicate the spirit of our times.

An original Music Hall commission, ‘WOKE’ is a physical reaction to the daily news. A bold and dynamic socially conscious one-act ballet featuring the full company that examines our humanity in conjunction with today’s political climate. It is a galvanizing protest rally of a ballet that explores the essence of “wokeness” —  to injustice, to brutality, and to political chaos. The ballet is set to a remix of music by Kendrick Lamar, Logic, Drake, Diplo, and more. ‘WOKE’ doesn’t clamp down on a singular definition, it demonstrates the reward of confronting faults and ambivalence.

Weather permitting, the performance will take place in Music Hall’s brand-new outdoor amphitheater just adjacent to its historic building. Vince Paul, President & Artistic Director of Music Hall: “We are excited to give audiences not only a world-class dance performance – fresh, thought-provoking, and gorgeous – but an exquisite evening in our spacious amphitheater, as we all come back together after far too many months apart.”

The performance will mark the culmination of a week of summer intensive classes also held at the Music Hall – the tenth consecutive session, in which students ages 8 – 25 eagerly soak up Complexions’ signature movement style and learn original choreography from company repertoire. The students’ culminating performance will be held just prior to the professional dancers taking the stage.

Founded in 1994 by Master Choreographer Dwight Rhoden and legendary dancer Desmond Richardson, Complexions is in demand around the world, routinely touring to eager audiences in Europe and Asia as well as North America’s cultural capitals. The Company redefines contemporary dance by serving up a groundbreaking mix of styles ranging from ballet to hip hop. “Companies like Complexions are game-changing: they’re forging a path for what ballet can be instead of what it historically has been.” –The Guardian, Alexandra Villarreal
