The best in gospel music was enjoyed by the members and friends of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in West Newton, Pa., when they recently celebrated Rev. Eileen O. Smith’s 13th year as a pastor.
There was no shortage of accolades as the members emotionally shared their words and gifts of appreciation for Pastor Smith’s passion to teach and minister to their families. The implementation of a local Food Distribution Program to neighborhood families as well as 23 years experience as a hospice chaplain has afforded many opportunities for Rev. Smith to share her expertise and compassion as a grief and domestic violence counselor. She has been the recipient of numerous awards and commendations. She is also the founder and coordinator of the Minority Emergency Preparedness Task Force and prepared an on-line curriculum case study on Community Emergency Response Teams for Harvard University.

Reverend Smith attended the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and is a 2000 graduate of Geneva College, and her legacy of service and ministry continues through her daughters, recording artist Rev. Nikki Porter and Toya Jones, PhD, professor at the University of Pittsburgh. She is also the proud grandmother of three.

Mt. Zion Baptist Church has become a beacon of light, and a place for personal and spiritual growth because of Rev. Smith’s desire to inspire success. The  praise group Voices for Christ provided perfect vocal harmony, and the dynamic Porter and friends led the crowd to glorious praise.
