Movie Review: “Lucy”

lucyWith the two starring actors being Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman I figured this movie would be a “must see”. I must say I wasn’t ready for the heaviness of this movie. The story was about the capacity at which humans can use their brain, a mixture of science fiction action and drama.

Johansson as Lucy, a young college student who unknowingly finds herself mixed up in a high stakes drug deal. She is forced to transport a very powerful synthetic drug in her lower intestine. The bag holding the drugs was punctured causing the drugs to be released inside her body. The massive dose of the synthetic drug had a tremendous effect on her cerebral capacity. This allowed Lucy to begin accessing more and more of her brain’s capability. As this happened Lucy transforms into a merciless warrior.

Freeman as Professor Norman is a university professor seemingly obsessed with the capacity of the human brain. Norman appears to have devoted much of his professional life to this phenomenon. He is given the opportunity to meet with Lucy, whose condition confirms his thesis regarding the human brain. They both believe that it is important for Lucy to share the knowledge she has gained by accessing her brain more and more. They also believe that once she achieve 100% capacity she will cease to exist in the world as we know it.

I found the concept of the movie to be very intriguing. Johannson and Freeman both did an exemplary job in bringing their characters to life on the big screen.

I feel, however, that the storyline did not match the intensity of the concept. The story that was told appeared to be a bit too elementary to carry a concept as involved and sophisticated as the capacity of the human brain and its use. The story ended rather prematurely.

My overall rating for the movie is a “C-”
