From the red-carpet that brimmed with legends Smokey Robinson, Berry Gordy and more to decades of music being performed on stage, the opening night of Motown The Musical left every Detroiter in the Fisher Theatre proud to be from a town that changed the music industry forever.
Most Detroiters would assume they know the Motown story, some will even tout that they have visited the legendary Hitsville USA studio. Yet, there is still something more personal about a story being told on stage from the viewpoint of Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown Records. The musical opens with a conflicted Gordy on the night of the televised Motown 25 in 1983, as he reflects on his ambivalent emotions on the state of his company, the artist that have stayed and left, we are then taken on a flashback voyage on how it all began. From the stories of Gordy convincing his family to believe in his vision of an assembly line way of creating artist to his love affair with Diana Ross.

Unlike many musicals, this production not only provides musical entertainment, but a true connection to our home, Detroit, Motown. It shows the impact that the record label had during segregation, freedom fighters and the voice it provided for that day’s generation. From artists like Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations – Motown The Musical shows how these legendary artists and so many more created the soundtrack that transformed America.
