The Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) is honored to announce that on May 19, 2015, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, City Council President Brenda Jones and City Council members will proclaim Detroit as a “Purple Heart City.”
By taking this action, the city of Detroit pays tribute to the city’s native sons and daughters who were wounded or killed in combat by the enemies of the United States of America, defending the very freedoms that make this nation so great. For their service and sacrifice they received the Purple Heart Medal. Detroit has a proud tradition of supporting and honoring our Nation’s Veterans, Active Duty Military, Guards, Reserves and their families — an inherent part of the heritage, tradition, spirit, and fabric of what makes Detroit such a unique and special city.
The media and the public are invited to attend a historic and patriotic ceremony that will take place on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, 2 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI. The day’s events at 8:00 AM, with the raising of the “American and Purple Heart City” flags outside the Municipal Center, followed by a rendering of “TAPS” near the Spirit of Detroit statue. At 9:00 AM, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan will present a Proclamation on behalf of the City of Detroit, City Council President Brenda Jones will present a Testimonial Resolution on behalf of the City Council, declaring Detroit as a “Purple Heart City,” to the State of Michigan Sr. Vice Commander, Leonard M. Milewski, who will accept the Proclamation on behalf the Military Order of the Purple Heart and all veterans from the State of Michigan who were killed or wounded on the battlefield in defense of this great nation.
Attending the ceremony will be State and City officials, members of the Detroit Veterans Task Force, and representatives of Detroit Veteran Service Organizations. Also attending will be Patriot Dan Cannode, Commander of MOPH Region II, and other Purple Heart recipients from throughout the State and the greater Detroit area.
The organization now known as the “Military Order of the Purple Heart of the U.S.A. Inc.,” (MOPH) was formed in 1932 for the protection and mutual interest of all combat wounded veterans and active duty men and women who have received the decoration. Chartered by the Congress, The MOPH is unique among Veteran Service Organizations in that all its members were wounded in combat. For this sacrifice, they were awarded the Purple Heart Medal. With grants from the MOPH Service Foundation, the MOPH and its Ladies Auxiliary promote Patriotism, Fraternalism, and the Preservation of America’s military history. Most importantly, through veteran service, they provide comfort and assistance to all Veterans and their families, especially those requiring claims assistance with the VA, those who are homeless, and those requiring employment assistance. Programs of the MOPH include VA Volunteer Service, First Responder Recognition, JROTC Leadership Award, Scholarships, Americanism, Purple Heart Trail and Cities, Welfare, and numerous community service programs, all with the objective of service to Veterans and their families.
