Literacy Fair is part of district’s strategic mission to improve student achievement through creative and engaging core subject activities that involve the entire community
Detroit Public Schools’ Office of Literacy kicks off the district’s Third Annual Literacy Fair on Tuesday, May 19. This exciting three-day event will be celebrated at more than 30 schools through hundreds of literacy-themed activities.
This year’s theme is “Writing is Exciting and Reading is Insightful: A Showcase of Literacy across the Disciplines.” The Literacy Fair showcases the reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills of students in grades Pre-K through 12.

The DPS Office of Literacy, LitWorld, and GlobalGirls are sponsoring the “10,000 Global Girls LitClub Story Summit” at Earhart. LitClub members from Carver STEM Academy, Detroit International Academy (DIA), Golightly Education Center, and Earhart will participate. LitClub members will be introduced to key members of the 10,000 Global Girls Initiative: Pam Allyn, Founder and Executive Director of LitWorld, Kylie Schuyler, Founder and Executive Director of Global Girls Rising, Jennifer Estrada, Director of the 10,000 Global Girls Initiative, and Dr. Deborah Winston. Students will engage in literacy activities, singing, and a writing workshop led by Writer-In-Residence, Casey Rocheteau, who is the first winner of the Write A House Contest and works with DIA and Western International High School students through the InsideOut Literary Arts Project.
“The Literacy Fair’s many fun and creative activities and programs allow students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of how literacy transcends disciplines, including Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics,” said Dr. Deborah Winston, Executive Director of the Office of Literacy.
The Literacy Fairs are part of the district’s ongoing strategic vision to find innovative and engaging ways to improve academics. Since 2010, Detroit Public Schools students’ standardized assessment scores on the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) have risen in 14 of 18 subjects/grades tested. DPS closed the gap with state peers in a number of categories. In the vital Reading assessments, DPS closed the gap (demonstrated increases in performance exceeding statewide increases) in 5 of the 6 grades tested.
