More City Employees Set to Return to Work, Feed The Frontlines Serves 20,000

The mayor announced the next round of city employees return to work May 18. Among the more than 150 returning to work are building inspectors, lawyers, and people working on housing repairs.

“When we started bringing employees back in large numbers two weeks ago, I said it was my goal to create a work environment where you were at least as safe coming to work in the city of Detroit as if you had stayed home – that is absolutely our standard,” said Duggan.

Since May 1, very few city employees across departments have tested positive for COVID-19:

  • 898 DPD tested – 1.5% positive
  • 229 DFD tested – 2% positive
  • 31 DDOT tested – 3% positive
  • 54 other departments tested – 2%

These number come after the city established safety guidelines for people returning to work featuring six principles that each department must adhere to. These principles include daily temperature checks, workplace distancing, and hygiene protocols.

Mayor Duggan also announced the completion of the Feed the Frontlines program this week. It has provided 20,000 delivered meals to police officers, firefighters, medics, DDOT drivers and health care workers over the past month by enlisting more than 100 Detroit restaurants, providing them a stream of revenue curing the COVID-19 crisis.

Donors contributed more than $400,000.
