Oscar-winning actress Mo’Nique is gearing up for a new Netflix comedy special after settling a discrimination lawsuit with the streaming platform.
On Tuesday (July 19), Mo’Nique, 54, announced that her next stand-up comedy special would be housed on Netflix. News of the partnership follows her racial and gender discrimination lawsuit against the streamer, which was settled just last month.
“Can y’all believe this s—?,” Mo’Nique said in a video posted on Netflix’s Twitter account. “I done came on home to Netflix.”
The actress initially filed a lawsuit against Netflix in 2019 alleging that the company offered her less money for a comedy special than her fellow male and white female industry colleagues.
According to Mo’Nique, she was ‘lowballed’ at $500,000 for a special, while Amy Schumer was offered $11 million, and Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock were offered $20 million each.
After over two years, the comedian settled her discrimination lawsuit with Netflix on June 14.
“Plaintiff Mo’Nique Hicks and Defendant Netflix, Inc., through their respective counsel of record, hereby stipulate and agree to dismiss this entire action, including without limitation all claims alleged therein, with prejudice, with each party to bear her or its own costs, expenses, and attorneys’ fees,” June 14 court documents obtained by People state.
As she announced her comedy special, Mo’Nique also revealed that a Netflix film was in the works with director Lee Daniels, who she recently mended fences with after a decade-long feud.
“I’m excited to say that I’ll be shooting my first Netflix special, in addition to reuniting with my friend, director Lee Daniels on the Netflix film The Deliverance,” the Oscar-winner said. “You won’t want to miss either of them, so stay tuned.”
