The mother and aunt of suspected baby killer De’Marquise Elkins (pictured) were arrested Tuesday on charges that they lied to police, The Atlanta Journal-Constitutional reports[1].

De’Marquise, 17, is charged with killing 13-month-old Antonio Santiago in a shooting in Brunswick, Ga., last Thursday. Another teen, Dominique Lang, 15, was also charged in connection with the shooting.

Katrina Elkins, 36, (pictured), the teen’s aunt, and Karimah Elkins, 33, his mother, gave police information that helped lead investigators to a small pond where they found a handgun, Glynn County police Chief Matt Doering told the Associated Press. De’Marquise’s aunt said publicly that her nephew was at home eating breakfast during the time of the shooting and could not have killed the baby, according to the Journal-Constitution.

Police would not elaborate on what exactly either Katrina or Karimah allegedly lied about.

“We arrested them last night and brought them back to headquarters, where we afforded them the opportunity to make additional statements,” Doering told the AP on Tuesday. “They did, and that information led us to other witnesses … (who) led us to an area where the gun was disposed of.”

Doering said the gun was being tested to determine if it was the weapon used to kill baby Antonio last week.

Both women posted $1,104 bail on the charges. Kirimah was released but Katrina was held on a probation violation charge for Henry County. She was charged with two misdemeanors — speeding and driving with a suspended license.

The toddler was shot to death in a stroller as his mother, Sherri West, was pushing him on a street near their apartment in Brunswick’s south end. West told police De’Marquise demanded money, then shot her in the thigh and her child in the head.

She later identified him from a photo lineup.
