No insurance required at free event at Ford Field to promote men’s health and education

Thousands of metro Detroiters will “Fight Like a Man” at Ford Field on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., during the ninth annual Men’s Health Event, presented by the MIU Men’s Health Foundation. Free health screenings will be provided to male attendees 18 and older – including those without health insurance – with the support of Premier Health Care Partner Saint Joseph Mercy Health System.
This free annual event provides men with an assessment of their current health and screenings for some of the most treatable diseases. Since many illnesses can be prevented by diet and lifestyle, in addition to age-appropriate screenings, the event also offers a better understanding of how to live a healthy lifestyle, information about men’s health topics and increased awareness about advances in health care.
More than 16,000 metro Detroiters attended the first eight years of the Men’s Health Event, receiving more than 60,000 health screenings to date.
“This year, we are asking men to ‘give it a shot,’ and learn more about the vaccinations available to them, among all of their other health priorities,” said Dr. Michael Lutz, president of the MIU Men’s Health Foundation and urologist with Michigan Institute of Urology. “Vaccines are not just for kids, and it’s important men vaccinate against Hep A and the flu. We will have both vaccines available at the 2019 Men’s Health Event.”
The free screenings offered at the event are comprehensively valued at $2,000. In addition to standard vital measurements, blood screenings will test for:
• Full lipid profile
• Glucose
• Liver function
• Magnesium
• Prostate-specific antigen (PSA)
• Testosterone
• Uric acid
Other screenings available at the event include:
• Blood pressure
• BMI and body fat percentage
• Depression
• Dental and oral cancer
• EKG
• Hearing
• HIV
• Joint and mobility
• Mental health
• Skin cancer
• Vision and glaucoma
• Waist-to-height ratio
Detailed descriptions of all blood tests and screenings are available at: https://www.miumenshealthfoundation.org/screening-details. Men who choose to participate in the blood screening tests will receive a copy and explanation of their results by mail. Guests who have screening, vaccination or other health questions can “Ask a Health Care Expert” one-on-one and those with medication-related questions can “Ask a Pharmacist.”
“Based on data collected at our previous Men’s Health Events, nearly half of Metro Detroit men see a doctor only when they are having a problem simply because they don’t like to or they’re scared,” said Lutz. “Many of our most dangerous health conditions don’t have readily recognized symptoms until they are in advanced stages. Our screenings save lives, and we have the most in-depth blood screening panel available at a free health event. Through the Men’s Health Event, we are inspiring men to ‘choose to know’ and equipping them to ‘fight like a man’ for their health. And for those who join us every year, be a friend and bring a friend.”
In addition to health screenings, attendees can participate in several physical activities, including the Orangetheory Fitness Challenge offering a variety of exercises on Ford Field. Finishers will receive swag courtesy of Orangetheory Fitness. Holy Yoga will host a beginner-friendly, all-levels yoga class on Ford Field and the Black Men Run group will lead a one-mile run/walk.
Raffle prizes, giveaways and a complimentary lunch will be available, in addition to guest speakers, health and sports displays and free men’s haircuts. The halftime event will feature ticket giveaways to future Detroit Tigers games.
