Not since the days of A.J. Vaughn (1967) and Ed Skonewski (1975) has the Wayne State Football team looked this promising. The Warriors’ season gets more interesting every time they step on the field and earn a well-deserved victory.
Since their loss to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Saginaw Valley State, 21-13, on Sept. 5, head coach Paul Winters’ grid squad reeled off three straight GLIAC victories at the University Of Indianapolis (27-23), Findlay University at home (35-21), and at Tiffin University (38-8) and recently a spectacular come from behind victory in the second half in the homecoming game over Ashland (47-40). WSU started the season off with a 31-14 win over Mercyhurst. The Warriors are currently 4-1 in the GLIAC and 5-1 overall.
All-American running back Joique Bell has been leading the charge. Recently against Ashland, Bell scored six touchdowns, including the winning 45-yard TD pass from freshman quarterback Mickey Maher with 30 seconds left to defeat the Eagles. Currently, he leads the nation (NCAA Division II) in rushing yards (see statistics).
WSU has other big play makers on both sides of the ball. A few are cited here.
On offense, the passing game has been as effective as the running game. Wide receiver sophomore Tony Burrell, senior Aaron Higginbottom, and junior Ed Sanders (Detroit Renaissance) have given the WSU passing attack the muscle it needs.
Burrell has caught three TD passes for 53 yards (Indianapolis), 19 and 65 yards (Tiffin). Higginbottom has caught one TD pass for 16 yards (Mercyhurst) and Sanders caught a TD pass for 35 yards (Findlay) and a key 13-yard pass from Moher which set up the winning score against Ashland.
Senior running back Bruno Shkrelli has been a supporting cast in the backfield scoring one TD this year for 20 yards (Findlay). Sophomore runningback Josh Renell returned a kickoff 90 yards for a TD against Indianapolis.
The remaining games for the Warriors are Oct. 10 at Northern Michigan, Oct. 17 Ferris State, Oct. 24 at Hillsdale,Oct. 31 Northwood, and Nov. 7 at Grand Valley State.
