After Gov. Whitmer addressed the Rebuilding Michigan plan at yesterday’s State of Address, the State Transportation Commission approved $3.5 billion in road and bridge bonds.
Michigan roads have been a glaring issue that Gov. Whitmer focused on during her 2018 governor campaign. This new incentive will add and develop 122 significant road developments throughout the next five years, a step that Whitmer didn’t want to “wait” on. “These new projects will only address the worst of our most highly traveled state roads. We still need the legislature to come up with a real, long-term solution to fix the roads,” Whitmer said during Wednesday’s address.
The funding will go toward roads in Oakland County, Wayne County, Macomb County, Calhoun County, and Ingham County. The following road projects include I-696, I-275, I-94, M-59, I-475, I-496, and US-127. Agreeing to the Rebuilding Michigan plan, there won’t be a wait at the start of construction on all projects.
Previous governors, including Governor Blanchard, Governor Engler, and Governor Granholm, have raised funds for road building and repairs in the past. Her initial “Plan A” proposal for the roads didn’t move forward through the legislature, forcing her to create “Plan B.” “I am not here to play games,” Whitmer said. “That’s why it’s time for Plan B, for those of you who want to keep playing games, I’m going to press on without you.
