Michigan stomps Middle Tennessee 40-21 in season opener

The Michigan Wolverines opened their 2019 college football season with head scratching turnovers in the first half. Luckily, it meant nothing in they defeated the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders 40-21.

Michigan quarterback Shea Patterson threw for 203 yards and three touchdowns, with Nico Collins and Tarik Black being on the receiving end of two scores. In addition to his score, Black led the Michigan receiving corps with 4 receptions for 80 yards.

Black being in action was a boost for the Wolverines who were without Donovan Peoples-Jones due to injury. Black has been the victim of unfortunate injuries himself. This past Saturday was only his tenth game in his two seasons donning the maize and blue. He left the game in the first half due to cramping, but later returned in the second half.

The Wolverines’ first half was marked by underwhelming play. Patterson’s fumble on the first play of the season was followed by a quick score from the Blue Raiders. Middle Tennessee quarterback Asher O’Hara split three Michigan defenders on an 18-yard run to put the Blue Raiders on the board.

With their next two drives being a punt and a field goal, the Wolverines didn’t find themselves in the endzone until Nico Collins scored on a 28- yard TD grab from Patterson. It was one of his many dazzling grabs for the evening.
