Michigan Still Has Some Of The Weakest Renters’ Rights Protection

Though the city of Birmingham is set to pass ordinances to protect renters later on today, advocates said the local laws only applies to those over the age of 65 and those buildings with four units or more, the Detroit Free Press reported this morning.

As is, Michigan landlords can evict a tenant without cause, even if the renters pay on time and are otherwise good tenants.

According to Oakland County Commissioner Charlie Cavell, each city, township and village regulates how landlords operate, unless the state passes a law, the Free Press reported

Ann Arbor passed laws to help bolster renters’ rights last fall, but the way the wording is stated, they still don’t stop a landlord for evicting a tenant without cause.

“When you read contracts for renting, they’re full of things people need to look out for. There’s often nothing that says, even if you’re a good tenant, you can renew your lease,” said Dorothy Conrad, a Birmingham resident who recently fought her senior housing complex from throwing her out.
