As apart of Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s state-wide COVID-19 response, the Michigan National Guard has joined food bank staff to help feed the people of Michigan. From now until mid-April, National Guard members will assist in four communities across the state including Flint, Pontiac, Ann Arbor and Comstock Park.
They will be helping with food packaging as well as mobile distribution to vehicles picking up food. Personal protection equipment is being provided to the Michigan National Guard to help contain the spread of COVID-19. They are expected to service up to 600 Michigan families daily.
Governor Whitmer says she’s appreciative of the state’s national guard assistance during this crisis.
“I could not be more proud of their service, commitment, and determination, and they are making a difference in the state’s response to COVID-19.”
Whitmer adds,
“The aid that men and women of the Michigan National Guard will provide to food banks across Michigan is further proof that the Michigan National Guard is a true cornerstone of Michigan communities.”
Previously, the Michigan National Guard has supported the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services by assembling and loading critical personal protective gear such as gowns and face shields.
Additionally, they worked with Grand Rapids Home for Veterans and the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette to conduct temperature screening of all employees before they entered and ensured screening protocols are being followed to protect resident veterans.
Maj. Gen. Paul Rogers, adjutant general of the Michigan National Guard says they are always on call and prepared to aid their community.
“As the response to COVID-19 continues, we stand ready to serve our neighbors, family, and friends in the communities in which we live and work.”
He says strong dedication to the citizens of Michigan is the standard.
“The Michigan National Guard strives to be a provider of exceptional service.”
The Michigan National Guard has serviced the state since it was declared a territory in 1805. It was known as the Michigan Militia at the time. The Michigan National Guard has served in every major state and US campaign since.
