Michigan Football Stays Undefeated, MSU Drops Fourth Straight

In week six of college football, #4 ranked Michigan continued to shine, staying undefeated and moving to 6-0 on the season. The Wolverines traveled to Indiana to take on the Hoosiers.  It wasn’t a perfect game, the Wolverines committed 10 penalties overall and faced some adversity especially in the first half as the found themselves in a 10-10 tie at half time. However they came up with a big second half to score 21 unanswered points against the Hoosiers and pull away with a 31-10 victory.  

Another week and another impressive game for Running Back Blake Corum of Michigan who added to his total touchdowns for the season.  Corum now ranks second in the nation in touchdowns scored (11) and third in rushing yards (735).  Quarterback JJ McCarthy had another strong game as well completing 28 of 36 passes for 304 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Michigan’s Ronnie Bell led all receivers with a 121 yard game, while teammates Luke Schoonmaker added 67 yards and 1 TD, alongside Cornelius Johnson who gained 58 yards and had 2 TDs.  The Wolverines defense continued to dominate and made their presence felt as they  held the Hoosiers to a total of just 19 yards in the game and sacked the Indiana Quarterback 7 times.  

On the same day in E. Lansing, the Michigan State Spartans had a bigger task on hand as they attempted to take down the #3 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. The Buckeyes scored on their opening drive giving an early impression that it was going to be a long day for the Spartans. However, OSU Quarterback CJ Stroud threw an interception in the first quarter that was returned by Charles Brantley of Michigan State, tying the game at 7-7.  The Buckeyes then scored on their next possession and never looked back.

Michigan State couldn’t find much success on the day.  The rushing attack gained only 7 yards in the game (compared to 237 rushing yards by OSU).  And the Spartan offense could only muster up 12 first downs whereas the Buckeyes had nearly 2 1/2 times that with 29 first downs of their own.  It was the same result on the defensive side for the Spartans, who couldn’t stop the high powered Buckeye’s offense.  OSU Running Back Tre’vion Henderson ran for 118 yards on 19 carries and the Buckeyes had two receivers with over 100 yards in the game. QB Stroud threw for over 361 yards and became the first player in Buckeye history with six touchdowns in three games.    

This week, #4 Michigan will host #10 Penn State at Michigan Stadium in a top 10 matchup game that will be a “maize out” with fans being asked to wear the color maize.  Michigan State will look to end their losing streak as they host a 3-3 Wisconsin Badger team in E. Lansing.

Michigan 31 – Indiana 10
Ohio State 49 – Michigan State 20
