Fireworks are a Fourth of July staple, but before you light up the sky, here’s what you need to know about Michigan’s fireworks laws for 2024. This week through Friday, Michiganders can legally set off fireworks between 11 a.m. and 11:45 p.m. on private property.
State law ensures that municipalities can’t ban fireworks during these hours from June 29 to July 4. If July 5 falls on a Friday or Sunday, the rules extend to that day as well. Just remember, lighting fireworks on public property like sidewalks, streets, schools, and churches is a no-go and could land you a fine of up to $500.
Consumer-grade fireworks, such as sparklers and smoke bombs, are fair game on your property. But selling fireworks to minors? That’s illegal in Michigan.
Safety is key when it comes to fireworks. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has a few tips: soak used fireworks in water before tossing them, keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby, and steer clear of using aerial fireworks in state parks or recreational areas. And remember, only light fireworks during the state-approved time frames. While the risk of fire is always there, the DNR notes it’s lower this year than last.
For those looking to catch a professional display, Michigan has plenty of firework showcases lined up in the coming days. MIFun4U is a great resource for finding events across the state. Here are some highlights:
