The Wolverines brought an 8-0 conference record into Assembly Hall and Yogi Ferrell sent them packing with their first loss.  Indiana defeated tenth ranked Michigan 63 to 52.  Michigan was off its game offensively as they only shot 23 percent from beyond the arc leading to their lowest point total of the season.
Indiana point guard Yogi Ferrell ran the show for Indiana as he scored 27 points.   He was eight of ten from the field while nailing seven out of eight shots from three.  The six foot sophomore point guard only had two assists to go with his scoring outburst.
Ferrell was also tasked with guarding Michigan’s leading scorer Nik Stauskas.  Stauskas took six shots on Sunday and only made one.  Even though he was outweighed by thirty pounds and outsized by six inches, Ferrell was able to use his quickness and awareness to hold Stauskas 12 points below his average.
It was an all-around rough day for the Wolverines as they only had two players in double digits.  Derrick Walton Jr. led the team in scoring with 13.  Six of this thirteen came from the free throw line.  Walton has recently stepped up his play and is better filling the void that was left by Trey Burke.  Spike Albrecht was also a non-factor as he was held scoreless.
This game was an example of how Michigan misses Mitch McGary.  Jordan Morgan and Jon Horford were held to a combined five points and ten rebounds.  The team was out rebounded 30 to 22.  Jon Horford had no points and no rebounds.
Freshman Zak Irvin played a healthy 17 minutes in the game and scored seven points.  He was three of six from the field and his only other stat was his one offensive rebound.  He was the Wolverines’ only scoring off the bench.
Michigan’s big men have to be better if they want any chance to go deep in the tournament.  They also need their shooters to be able to consistently score points.  If Michigan shoots sub forty percent from three, they will more than likely have an early exit.
