The Michigan Chronicle recently announced Jamjomar, Inc. will receive the Company of the Year award at this year’s Legacy In Motion Newsmaker’s Gala on December 10th at 6pm at the Garden Theater in Detroit. Since opening Jamjomar Inc., over 26 years ago, owner, James Thrower, has left an indelible mark on the Detroit-area McDonald’s business community and across the country. Thrower’s entire life has been dedicated to serving the community.
“The Michigan Chronicle is honored to recognize James Thrower and Jamjomar Inc., for their outstanding commitment to serving the Detroit community. He and his family has selflessly served this community for several years. He is most deserving of this honor,” said Hiram E. Jackson, CEO of Real Times Media and publisher of the Michigan Chronicle.
Following a career in professional football playing as a defensive back for the Philadelphia Eagles and the Detroit Lions, Thrower served as a loan executive and executive liaison to the board chairman of the NAACP in New York City. From there, he became Director of Community Affairs at Stroh’s Brewery and eventually Regional Manager of Public Issues and Planning at Michigan Consolidated Gas Company.
More recently, Thrower has served as vice chairman of McDonald’s national advertising committee, as a Detroit Water Board commissioner, proud steward of Oak Grove A.M.E Church and faithful member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He was also inducted into the Texas A&M University (Commerce, TX) Hall of Fame for excellence in track and field.
Thrower, along with his family, operate eight McDonald’s restaurants in metro-Detroit and sixteen in the state of Louisiana. Thrower’s children continue the family’s legacy of entrepreneurship and community service. His wife Marla, sons James II and Jamar, and daughter Marissa are owner operators. His daughter, Joni, is the company’s General Counsel and will become an owner operator in 2016.
The key to success in business, Thrower says, is having “G.A.M.E,” which stands for gathering information, analyzing that information, making a decision and executing that decision in the best way possible. His formula for success in life is simple: “If you want your success to have a long reach, then your reach must pull up the next two generations. Family trees have the strongest roots.”
Jamjomar, Inc. is pleased to lead, guide and participate in several community endeavors. These initiatives include Ronald McDonald House Charities, the NAACP, Oak Grove AME Church, the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the Michigan Black Chamber of Commerce, and the Detroit Urban League.
The Michigan Chronicle Legacy in Motion Newsmaker’s Gala is one of metropolitan Detroit’s premier events that celebrates individuals who have made outstanding community contributions. The event is regularly attended by movers, shakers and area newsmakers from senior level executives and political officials to community stakeholders.
This year’s theme, “Back to Paradise,” is also the theme for the Michigan Chronicle’s 80-year anniversary. Eight decades ago, in 1936, the Michigan Chronicle was founded in the area of Detroit called Paradise Valley. In 2016, 80 years later, the Chronicle will move to a new location, 1452 Randolph, in the heart of Paradise Valley. This year’s Legacy in Motion Gala will formally kick off our 2016 year-long 80th Anniversary Celebration.
