Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines snapped a five-game losing streak in bowl games and are one game closer to accomplishing their goal of winning a national championship. It took overtime, but the Wolverines came out on top over the Alabama Crimson Tide on Monday afternoon, Jan. 1, 27-20. Michigan is now 14-0 on the season for the first time in school history.
The Michigan defense once again stood strong sacking Alabama Quarterback Jalen Milrose five times in the first half alone. The Wolverines’ Braiden McGregor had two of those sacks to lead the team. Junior Colson led all players in the game with 10 tackles as Michigan held Milrose and Alabama to just 116 total passing yards. Milrose, who has the ability to run the ball, ran for 49 yards in the game but was stopped short of the goal line in overtime by the Michigan Defense on 4th and goal at the Michigan three yard line. That stance gave the Wolverines the victory.
On offense, it was Blake Corum leading the way with 83 total yards of rushing and breaking the Michigan all time rushing touchdown record of 55 as he scored on a run into the end zone to give the Wolverines the win in overtime. Corum also had a 27-yard touchdown reception for Michigan’s first touchdown in the game. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy improves to 26-1 as the starting QB. He rushed for 25 yards and had 17 completions on 27 attempts for a total of 221 passing yards in the game. After the game, Coach Harbaugh called him the “Greatest quarterback in University of Michigan college football history.”
After losing the last two years in the playoffs, the third time’s a charm for the Wolverines. They will now head to Houston to play the Washington Huskies (14-0), who beat Texas 37-31 in the other CFP semifinal game. That game will be played on Monday, Jan. 8, at NRG Stadium.
Final Score: Michigan 27 – Alabama 20
