MGM Grand Detroit helps the Detroit Youth Choir honor a proud legacy!

Must read

In 2019, the Detroit Youth Choir (DYC) won the hearts of Americans from coast to coast, with a thrilling second-place finish on NBC’s “America Got Talent.”   And in 2021, DYC was still creating its signature musical magic, which included its first on-screen production of “Black on Broadway,” a theatrical concert paying homage to the Broadway shows that paved the way for people of color.

DYC’s production of “Black on Broadway,” provided a platform for some of Detroit’s most talented youth (DYC’s Primetime and Center Stage Choirs) to perform music from Broadway classics like “The Wiz,” “The Color Purple,” “Dream Girls,” “Hamilton” and more on July 25.

But for the show to go on—at a time when the spirits of Detroiters needed to be lifted—additional help was required and MGM Grand Detroit was honored to be able to provide that support.

“With MGM Grand Detroit’s support we were able to complete our production, said DYC’s Creative Director Anthony White, whose organization is celebrating its 25th anniversary.  “Without the support, we would have come up short on our production budget. We would like to thank MGM Grand Detroit and everyone involved in the sponsorship and whenever MGM needs us, we’re here for them.  We hope this will be the beginning of an ongoing partnership that will support Detroit youth.”

MGM Grand Detroit team members witnessed and emotional, impromptu performance when DYC members visited MGM Grand Detroit in July during Black Music Month. And needless to say, DYC, as an organization, is always on the job for our city’s youth. The nonprofit’s mission is to offer youth across metropolitan Detroit a world-class performing arts experience that develops their creative skills and talents through music education, dance, and theatrical arts.

In addition to DYC’s spectacular run on “America Got Talent,” DYC has performed at various events around the city of Detroit, nationally, and internationally, including a performance at the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony before many celebrities, dignitaries, and pioneers of the music industry.
