Must read

MetPlus.org, the Detroit-based nonprofit founded by Dr. Sarah S. Pitts and Chet M. Pitts Sr., marked the grand opening of its new facility with a celebration that drew more than 550 community members. The weekend highlighted the organization’s commitment to empowerment, generosity, and community pride.

The event featured a massive giveaway organized in partnership with the UAW Local 182 Women’s Committee and the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU) Region 7 Canton. Detroit families received essential resources, including:

  • 100 backpacks filled with school supplies

  • 80 Chromebooks for students

  • Household necessities such as air conditioners, Lazy Boys, diapers, toiletries, coats, boots, clothing, furniture, and more

Festivities also included food trucks, family activities, and community engagement.

From 2024 to 2025, MetPlus.org has facilitated nearly $3 million in community giveaways, reaching Detroiters through education, housing, health services, and workforce programs. Last school year, the nonprofit made headlines by distributing 2,000 pairs of Nike Panda Dunks to local students.

“We are thrilled to see the impact our programs have on Detroit families,” said Dr. Sarah S. Pitts, co-founder of MetPlus.org. “This grand opening is a celebration of community love, resilience, and empowerment. Every family, student, and senior who benefits from our initiatives strengthens the fabric of Detroit.”

Long-Term Initiatives

The opening also highlighted MetPlus.org’s expanding mission, including:

  • Development of the MetPlus Senior Village to provide affordable, dignified housing for seniors

  • Launch of a donation distribution center to streamline resources for families, schools, and organizations

  • Ongoing programs in mental health therapy, home health aide services, and workforce development

Upcoming Giveaway

The nonprofit’s next Monthly Community Giveaway is set for September 20, 2025. The event will include food trucks, on-site registration, and the distribution of school supplies, clothing, electronics, household goods, and more.

“Detroit is a city full of potential, and we are committed to providing the tools, resources, and opportunities to ensure our residents thrive,” said co-founder Chet M. Pitts Sr.

With its new facility and continued dedication, MetPlus.org is positioning itself as a cornerstone of empowerment for Detroit families, seniors, and students.
