Meridian Health Doubles All $20 Donations to The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit

The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit has announced the Meridian $20 Challenge. This one-day event, scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 9, will see all $20 donations matched and quadrupled by Meridian Health, with a total matching cap of $15,000.

Running from midnight to 11:59 p.m., the initiative aims to bolster The Salvation Army’s ability to serve the needy in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties. Meridian Health’s generous offer will transform each $20 donation into $100, significantly amplifying the impact of each contribution.

Supporters wishing to participate can do so through various methods:

  • Texting GIFT to 24365
  • Using online platforms like Paypal, Venmo, or visiting SAmetrodetroit.org
  • Donating to physical red kettles
  • Calling 877-SAL-MICH

Nicole Felix, Meridian’s Vice President of Legislative & Government Affairs and a member of The Salvation Army’s Metro Advisory Board, expressed the company’s commitment: “This holiday season, Meridian is honored to sponsor the $20 Challenge as a way to uplift our communities and ensure the spirit of giving extends to social assistance programs The Salvation Army is providing to individuals and families across Michigan. We join hands with The Salvation Army to help alleviate the burdens families might face and to make a positive difference in their lives – not just during the holiday season but every day.”

Coinciding with this fundraising effort is The National Commander’s Red Kettle Challenge. Commissioner Kenneth G. Hodder, National Commander for The Salvation Army, has set a goal to out-fundraise other participants in a bell-ringing shift on the same day, with a national target of $2 million.

Locally, the community can show their support at the Kroger located at 23191 Marter Rd. in St. Clair Shores. Major Toni Dorrell, metro Detroit area commander for The Salvation Army Great Lakes Division, alongside Megan Slaven and Leslie Sosa from Meridian, will be volunteering to raise funds.

Major Dorrell emphasized the importance of this event: “The Salvation Army is counting on metro Detroiters to step up to not one, but two challenges on December 9. We have faith that the combined generosity of Meridian and our community will help spread Love Beyond Christmas. To those who are able to give, please consider donating this Christmas season. With a simple $20 bill, you will help provide meals, gifts, warmth, and hope to families who need it most.”
