The Mentoring Youth Network will be hosting its first annual Community Empowerment Expo late this year, Saturday, Oct. 10.
MYN is an organization whose mission is to inspire change in Detroit’s youth, is taking the initiative to help provide resources for communities, youth, and families. The local mentoring organization located in Detroit services children in grades K-8.
“Mentoring Youth Network was established to bridge the gap between parents, children and communities,” said Tony Weston, MYN executive director. “Our continued efforts are what prompted us to offer this type of event to community organizations, schools, and other groups so that a network can be built to offer needed support to those who otherwise can’t get it.”
Created in February 2009, MYN focuses on the development of young males and young ladies. Its mission is to motivate and prepare young men and women for “real-world” experiences through self-esteem building, higher education, entrepreneurship, creative thinking and practical life skills training.
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Rutherford/Winans Academy, 16411 Curtis, Detroit, Michigan 48235. A light breakfast and lunch will be served.
MYN’s Community Empowerment Expo will host concurrent and separate workshops for youth and adults.
Topics include suicide awareness, bullying prevention, conflict resolution, resume writing, interviewing skills, domestic violence, health and wellness and much more. There will also be raffles throughout the event.
The Community Empowerment Expo is free and open to the public.
