Friends of Detroit Animal Care and Control (Friends of DACC), the nonprofit organization that supports Detroit Animal Care and Control (DACC), and Best Friends Animal Society, are teaming up for another adoption campaign on Friday, September 16 through Sunday, September 18 encouraging future pet owners to adopt, not buy, their next family member.

Adoptions will take place at Detroit Animal Care and Control, located at 7401 Chrysler Dr. Detroit, MI 48211. DACC is open seven days a week from 10:30am to 3:30pm. All available animals have been spayed/neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and tested for heartworm disease. Adoptable animals can be viewed online at www.facebook.com/groups/daccadoptables

“Detroit’s municipal shelter is constantly facing space constraints and we hate to see good dogs not getting a chance to be adopted. To encourage metro Detroiters to come out and give these animals a loving home, Friends of DACC is sponsoring the adoption fees during this event,” said Dana Eldred, executive director of Friends of Detroit Animal Care and Control.

Recent data released by Best Friends showed that U.S. shelters were seeing an increase in animal intakes and a decrease in pet adoptions from shelters. This has steadily turned into a crisis in the animal welfare community, where many shelters are over capacity. Friends of DACC has also noticed a downturn in adoptions at the shelter, but intake numbers are setting records this year.

Anyone considering adding a new pet to their family can make a difference by choosing to adopt instead of purchasing their pet.

“There is a growing shelter crisis across the country and the animal welfare community won’t just sit by and let innocent pets die,” said Julie Castle, CEO of Best Friends Animal Society. “In fact, it’s quite the opposite. We’re joining forces with our vast network of shelters and rescues across the country to host our third National Adoption Weekend since May to incentivize people to get out and adopt.”

Due to recent problems such as staffing shortages, limited shelter hours, decreased volunteers, and reduced adoption events, the time is now to help save lives by adopting a pet.

“We have proof that national promotions like the first two adoption weekends we did in May and July work,” said Castle. “Our July National Adoption Weekend saw close to 10,000 animals adopted in a three-day period.”

That’s why Friends of Detroit Animal Care and Control felt compelled to be a part of the upcoming National Adoption Weekend. “We would love to see all of our available animals get adopted,” said Dana Eldred. “We offer a slumber party foster option if you just aren’t ready to commit. We also have our day trip foster program, “Detroit Dogventures.” Taking a dog out even for a short amount of time makes a big difference in helping to get them adopted.”
