Monday Aug. 28 at 7 PM, Mayor Mike Duggan, Deputy Mayor Todd Bettison, and leaders from six ShotStoppers organizations will gather at Kadesh Baptist Church for a District 7 Charter Mandated meeting. The focus of the meeting is to outline the early progress of a groundbreaking $10 million initiative funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) for Community Violence Intervention (CVI) in Detroit.
In a notable shift from traditional methods, this new initiative aims to measure the impact of CVI efforts through data-driven outcomes. Organizations acting as violence “interrupters” in key crime hotspots across the city will be evaluated and compensated based on their success in reducing violent crime.
The program, which was launched earlier this month, has already shown promising results. Leaders from the ShotStoppers organizations will share insights into the early successes and methods that have contributed to these positive outcomes. This isn’t just about making an impact on paper, but in the real lives of Detroit residents.
Particularly important for Detroit’s predominantly Black neighborhoods, the discussion will also emphasize the role of community policing. Community leaders assert that effective policing is not just about patrolling, but about building relationships and understanding the unique challenges of each community. It’s a critical element for making these interventions succeed.
Although tonight’s meeting is a chance to celebrate early successes, all involved acknowledge that this is a long-term endeavor.
For those who cannot attend in person, a recording of the meeting will be made available online, ensuring that Detroit residents can stay informed about this crucial community initiative.
The meeting begins at 7 PM at Kadesh Baptist Church, located at 23601 Plymouth Road. For more information, please visit the City of Detroit’s official website.
