DETROIT – Detroit Mayor Dave Bing accepted a donation today from the Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Association (DWBIA) in support of the annual fireworks celebration on the Detroit / Windsor riverfront. The 55th Annual Ford Fireworks Presented by Target will be held Monday evening, June 24.
DWBIA Board Chair Larry Horwitz presented a check for $5,200 (Canadian) to Mayor Bing in the Mayor’s office. “Our aim was to help the City of Detroit cover the costs of security for an event the people of Windsor and Detroit look forward to each year,” Horwitz said. “We wanted to do everything we could to support a great tradition and a huge economic driver for our members and merchants.”
“On behalf of the people of Detroit and this region, I want to thank the people of Windsor and the business owners who made this generous gift possible,” Mayor Bing said. “Our fireworks celebration continues to bring Detroit and Windsor together, and our collaboration continues to makes the partnership between our cities stronger.”
The Detroit Police Department (DPD) expects to spend approximately $144,217 on DPD labor costs during the 2013 fireworks event, considerably less than the $382,246 it spent on DPD labor in 2012. The expected savings of $238,028 is due to lower overtime costs, resulting from DPD’s recently adopted 12-hour shifts.
An additional savings of approximately $164,000 is due to the commitment of officers and resources from other area law enforcement agencies, at no charge to the City of Detroit. These agencies include: the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol; Federal Protective Service; Michigan State Police; Oakland County Sheriff; Wayne County Sheriff; and Macomb County Sherriff.
Approximately 1 million spectators gather in Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, to watch the fireworks show that celebrates Canada Day (July 1) and America’s Independence Day (July 4).
