Mayor Announces Construction Set to Resume, TCF Hospital Closed Temporarily

Mayor Duggan said construction on six housing projects is set to resume. Together these projects total an estimated $120 million. Of the 370 new housing units, 46 percent are reserved for affordable housing.

“We know that one of the obligations we are going to have to continue to have is affordable housing, particularly considering how hard the city has been hit economically,” said Duggan.

This comes after Governor Whitmer lifted the ban on construction, previously reported by the Michigan Chronicle.

Projects set to resume include:

  • A sanctuary of 42 permanent supportive units and 63 shelter beds
  • Affordable veteran housing
  • Parker Durand development on Kercheval in West Village featuring 92 units

The mayor added he wanted healthcare and education professionals to live in the same city they work in.

Duggan also announced that due to the flattening curve, the TCF temporary hospital is closing for now. Currently there are no patients being treated at the facility.

“I’m hoping they’ll stay empty, but we need to be careful,” said Duggan.

“A large number of the beds are going to stay there on reserve. Right now things are going our way, but if we decide to abandon with the warm weather the social distancing, we’ll need those beds over at the TCF Center again.”
