Mary Sheffield’s latest installment of “Occupy the Corner” kicked off Summer 2019 in Detroit.  This time though, she got an “alley-oop” from some familiar faces.

BIG3 Basketball, the basketball league founded by hip-hop mogul Ice Cube, decided to team with the President Pro-Tem for the special community service event. Last July, the BIG3 made a stop in Detroit. Due to the turnout, it is no surprise Detroit was tabbed to host the season opener.

Ricky Davis was in attendance representing the league and his charity, The Ricky Davis Legacy Foundation. Davis currently plays for the league’s Ghost Ballers.

“It’s just amazing to be able to give back, come out and see some kids”, said Davis. “To give them some words of encouragement while teaming up with Mary Sheffield brings everybody on a good note.”

Big Community Initiative

The BIG3 is no stranger to community service. According to Davis, community service is an ongoing initiative of the league.

“We do this every city we go to”, said Davis. “At these events, we bring in produce, [have] events for the kids, and just try to give back to the community any way that we can.” While the added support from the BIG3 was great, Sheffield’s office once again coordinated a successful community building event.

During the special give back, residents obtained information regarding voter registration, job training, minor felony expungement, and more. Additionally, utility payment assistance, housing assistance, healthcare information, and were available.

Partnering organizations included Pure Heart Foundation, Hot 107.5, Cease Fire, Detroit Employment Solutions, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, United Community Housing Coalition, THAW, Mothers of Murdered Children, and others.

The event didn’t lack in entertainment either, as artist Sada Baby made a special appearance, performing his hit song “Block Party”.
