Macy’s at Oakland Mall Set to Close This Week

Macy’s massive Oakland Mall store will close this week as the iconic retailer is shifting its focus to meet customers’ demands of “shopping more online than in person.”

The company announced earlier this year that it would be closing 70 stores nationwide, including four in Michigan. Aside from the Oakland Mall location, Macy’s stores in Flint (Genesee Valley Center), Sterling Heights (Lakeside Mall), and Traverse City (Grand Traverse Mall) will also close their doors this spring.

More than 90 full- and part-time non-unionized employees will be laid off at the Oakland Mall location by March 31, the company said in a letter to the state.

“Job eliminations are permanent and will occur between March 18th and March 31st, 2025,” the notice said. “Information about benefits will be made available to impacted employees as well as information about the opportunity to transfer to open positions in nearby Macy’s locations.”

Oakland Mall owner Mario Kiezi said earlier this year that Macy’s, originally a Hudson’s, was a true powerhouse and “one of the strongest department stores in the Midwest for decades.” While the closing marks the end of an era, he says the door is now open to tremendous opportunities.

“As for who will replace it, that is yet to be determined. However, we can confirm we are actively exploring transformative opportunities,” said Kiezi.

Across the country, Macy’s intends to fire 13% of its corporate workforce in addition to cutting thousands of retail jobs.

“As we prepare to deploy a new strategy to meet the needs of an everchanging consumer and marketplace, we made the difficult decision to reduce our workforce by 3.5% to become a more streamlined company,” the company said in a statement.
