Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist moved his pin to sign two marijuana bills into the Michigan legislature. Gilchrist signed House Bills 4126 and 4127, both of which will affect the way marijuana is packaged and distributed through licensed outlets in the State of Michigan.
House Bill 4126 requires the Marijuana Regulatory Agency (MRA) to promulgate a rule requiring marijuana establishments to include a warning on marijuana packaging for women who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding. This bill was sponsored by Representative Thomas Albert, R – Lowell.
House Bill 4127 requires the MRA to establish informational pamphlet standards and requires marijuana establishments to make a pamphlet available to every patron at the time of sale that includes safety information related to marijuana use by minors and the poison control hotline number. This bill was sponsored by Representative Daire Rendon, R – Lake City.
In 2019, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed an Executive Order to Establish Marijuana Regulatory Agency through the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA).
“This executive order will eliminate inefficiencies that have made it difficult to meet the needs of Michigan’s medical marijuana patients,” said Whitmer. “All elements of this Agency have been designed to serve and better protect Michigan residents, and I’m eager to have a unified effort across state departments to make sure this process runs effectively and efficiently. I appreciate the productive input I’ve received on this important issue, including from Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey.”
Legal marijuana sales began in November of 2019, and in December of 2019, marijuana sales topped $1.6 million in its first week. There are currently 27 locations in Michigan that are licensed to sell marijuana.
