Local Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity to Host Free Expungement Fair

Second chances are often elusive for those with a history of incarceration.

But the Redford Graduate Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated and the Ann Arbor Michigan Graduate Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity want to be a beacon of hope in offering a path to a brighter future for local Detroiters in need.

To that end, in partnership with Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc., the sorority is hosting a free expungement fair on May 11, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

For the past six years, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. has profoundly impacted over 100,000 individuals through its “Get Engaged” program. However, the organization desires to shift the narrative for those facing legal concerns and enable them to break free from the stigma of their past, which inspired the expungement fair.

Phina Ross, the President of the Upsilon Theta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta, shared, “The event holds great significance in offering a fresh start to those burdened by their past and fostering greater opportunities in the community.”.

People who were once incarcerated or accused of a crime are less likely to have access to jobs and housing and often face financial struggles due to stigmas and discrimination associated with their history, which can lead to psychological challenges and more.

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. teamed up with Legal Aid to emphasize the importance of empowering individuals to seek assistance with legal issues that may have been obstacles in employment, housing, and other aspects of life.

This collaboration is a testament to the organization’s dedication to positively impacting the community through S.H.E. (Social Action, Health Action, and Economic Action). Forging partnerships and creating programming with a community conscience, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. is working to address these crucial issues and provide much-needed support to those in need.

Registration for the upcoming event is preferred, but walk-ins are accepted. For more information, visit Zeta Phi Beta Sorority’s Instagram page at @redford_zetas.
