Local Nonprofit to Provide Over 1,000 Back to School Supplies for Metro Detroit Students

As we’re approaching a daunting transition from the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person education is back underway despite the hesitation from several families across metro Detroit. With several families who experienced job loss, lack of funds, and the inability to properly prepare their students for a new life behind the books, local nonprofit Mostyn Community Development (MCD) is working to be one of the many resources to help parents and students experience an easier transition. On August 28, 2021, from 1 pm-4 pm, MCD will set up shop at The House of Prayer and Praise to provide several needs for students going into the new school year.
The Spare Time Kick-Off Event will provide over 1,000 free back-to-school incentives. The incentives include over 300 book bags from Pepsi, all school supplies from Target and office depot, the volunteer team from Target, 45 pizzas from Little Caesars, 350 chips from BetterMade, 400 hot dogs from RJZ bbq, drinks donated by Pepsi and 150 free basketballs donated by the Detroit Pistons. Families can also expect several food trucks and a live musical performance by Detroit’s own, J. Reed. Additionally, the opportunity to register for COVID-19 vaccines for the day of the event will be provided, however, registration is required via www.mcdimpact.com.
MCD’s founder Raphael Mostyn is launching Spare Time during this event to support students with disabilities and to give them the opportunity to participate in sports and recreational activities. Students will participate in programs that will ultimately prepare them for the real world. Mostyn believes that the included bowling component will help students work on social and motor skills, communication, and team building. “I want to be able to start here by giving back to our community and make them aware of the other opportunities for students we are looking to provide,” said Mostyn, “being able to connect with influencers like the Detroit Pistons and Pepsi is all that we need to extend our upcoming initiatives to more students everyday”.
MCD is seeking to raise $650,000 to build a facility to host the Spare Time program, in addition to being able to continually provide incentives for their local community. For more information, or to donate or become a sponsor, contact [email protected] or visit www.mdcimpact.com.
