The Lions seemed to be on pace for their second win of the season Sunday but struggled offensively in the second half going on to lose 25-21 to the Arizona Cardinals. Matthew Stafford threw two touchdowns to Calvin Johnson in the second quarter. Stafford then failed to reach the endzone in the second half. 201 of his 278 passing yards came in the first half.
Reggie Bush injured his knee in the second quarter when Tony Jefferson hit Bush’s left knee with his helmet. Bush got up slowly and limped to the side line. Bush returned to the game but seemed to be favoring his left leg. He left the game in the third after a fumble and failed to return. He ended his day with 25 rushing yards and 44 yards receiving.
The Lions showcased problems in two areas, special teams and penalties. The Lions had 8 penalties for 101 yards on the day. They saw themselves consistently starting deep within their own territory. Bill Bentley had a big pass interference when he hit receiver Andre Roberts in the endzone on the Cardinals game winning drive. It was the Cardinals only third down conversion of the day.
David Akers was another part of the Lions struggles. He missed three field goals on the day; however, only two will show in the stat sheet. Akers missed a 52 yarder but was then given another shot after a running into the kicker penalty. It was a 47 yarder after the penalty but he missed it as well. Later in the game he attempted another 47 yarder but it was blocked.
It was good to see Calvin Johnson get into the endzone for two scores. He was able to do so while he was covered by the two time Pro Bowler Patrick Peterson. Hopefully he continues to find the endzone in the following weeks.
This game showed how important Reggie Bush is to the offense. If he had been healthy for the second half, there is no doubt in my mind that they would have scored more points. Bush will have an MRI on his knee but does not think it is too serious.
The Lions next game is Sunday at 1 against the Washington Redskins.
