LGBT Detroit to Host Evolution of Hotter Than July Black Pride Celebration

Serving as the world’s second oldest and longest-running Black LGBTQ+ Pride, an upcoming weekend in Detroit’s Black pride culture will honor legends and culturally relevant advocates with its highly-anticipated concert featuring American rap artist, “Da Brat” and featuring more fun and fanfare.

“The Evolution of Hotter than July” event will celebrate and honor the world’s second and oldest Black LGBTQ+ Pride celebration taking place in Detroit, Michigan from July 15 – 17 next weekend at Palmer Park 910 Merrill Place, Detroit, hosted by LGBT Detroit.

Beginning in 1991, the Black, Gay Pride movement began to provide Black LGBTQ+ people an alternative to the mainstream LGBTQ+ movement. Black Prides are planned and managed by organizations throughout the country dedicated to building solidarity; health and wellness; promoting unity; and ensuring the development of education, economic empowerment, and individual and collective work, responsibility, and self-determination.

LGBT Detroit, founded in 1994, commits to furthering its mission, increasing the prominence and visibility of Detroit’s LGBT culture, and building a strong, healthy, and vibrant community, with a focus on economic and racial justice, health care disparities, global sexual freedoms and expressions, and anti-discrimination policies. LGBT Detroit envisions a Michigan in which its citizens are treated fairly
and equitably under the law and activate, amplify, and sustain LGBT+ culture, education, advocacy, and human rights.

The celebration features a packed schedule of next-level events from July 15-17, with its highly anticipated Hotter Than July Concert, featuring Da Brat at Sound Board at Motorcity Casino Hotel on Saturday, July 16.

The weekend of events merges and celebrates Detroit’s Black pride culture including a candlelight vigil, a catered brunch, and an endorsed candidate forum, tapping into LGBT Detroit’s community mission on all fronts.
