Lamar Lemmons Jr., former three-term Michigan State Representative, dies at 87

Lamar Lemmons Jr., a former Michigan State Representative, was a strong voice in Lansing for the people he represented in District 2 for three terms. His district included parts of Detroit and other sectors of Wayne County. He later became a successful entrepreneur in the transportation industry. Lamar Lemmons Jr. passed on November 7, 2023. He was 87.

Born on June 23, 1936, in Savage, Mississippi, and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, to the union of Lucille and Lamar Lemmons Sr., Lemmons Jr. ultimately moved to Detroit in 1950. After matriculating through Detroit Public Schools, he served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Ashiya Air Force Base in Japan. After receiving an Honorable Discharge, Lemmons returned to Detroit and attended the Detroit Institute of Technology. He later worked as an assembler at Ford Motor Company, but retired from Eppert Oil Company.

From 2004 to 2010, Lemmons Jr. served as a State Representative in the Michigan House of Representatives (District 2). He was on numerous committees, including Commerce, Insurance, Senior Health, Security and Retirement. Lemmons Jr. was also a member of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus. After leaving office due to being term-limited, Lemmons Jr. became a successful entrepreneur as founder and President of Lemmons Transportation, in partnership with son Lamar Lemmons III. In addition, the elder Lemmons was a longtime member of the East Side Business Alliance.

On November 7, Lemmons Jr. peacefully transitioned from life to eternity, where he reunited with his parents and daughter, Deborah Lemmons.

Lamar Lemmons Jr., who lived a full and productive life, leaves to cherish his memories and legacy a devoted wife, Celestine; his loving sister, Irma Jean Martin; sons Lamar III (Georgia), Robert and Kenny; daughter Keeye; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Visitation for Lamar Lemmons Jr. will be held Thursday, November 16 (5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.) at Clora Funeral Home, 5801 E. Seven Mile Rd. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, November 17, at Clora Funeral Home (family hour is at 9:30 a.m., funeral at 10:00 a.m.).
