While student excitement builds toward winter break, Detroit Enterprise Academy’s principal is reminding parents about the importance of keeping children engaged in learning even during the holidays.
“This time of year, students really enjoy reading holiday-related books so a trip to the library to stock up on some fresh reading material is a great idea,” said Principal Chanavia Patterson. “We encourage our parents to limit television time and plan a few educational activities over break.”
Patterson shared five fun ways parents can incorporate learning into all of the family fun during the holidays. Winter break activities can include:
- Reading for pleasure: Find your favorite holiday book and have your child read aloud for family members and friends. See how many books they can read during their winter break.
- Make Cooking a Lesson: Have your child help make holiday treats for family, friends, or neighbors. Have them help with the measuring, baking time, and even attach a homemade card.
- Write, Write, Write: `Tis the season to spread joy! Have your child write notes or cards and practice their spelling and handwriting.
- Host a Game Night: Invite family, friends, or neighbors over for some friendly competition. Use reading, math, and problem solving skills during this evening of fun!
- Make the Most of Car Rides: Have your child count cards, read street signs, or practice math facts with flashcards.
“Two weeks is a long time if a student is not stretching their mind, and we do notice it when school is back in session in January,” Patterson said. “These tips can help eliminate learning loss while allowing students to enjoy time with their families during winter break.”
