Kamala Harris Involved In Motorcade Crash On The Way To White House

A motorcade vehicle holding Vice President Kamala Harris crashed onto the curb of a tunnel on Monday (October 3) as it was headed to the White House, raising security concerns.

“During a protective movement Monday, a vehicle in a motorcade had a minor overcorrection and struck a curb,” Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesperson for the Secret Service, told the HuffPost.

According to reports, no injuries were sustained from the accident.

Harris was escorted to her office in a different car following the incident, the Washington Post reports.

No public events were listed on her schedule for Monday, the day of the crash.

“The Vice President sustained no injuries and appreciates the quick response by her USSS detail to get her to the White House safely,” Harris’ spokesperson Kirsten Allen said in a statement.

Though the VP ultimately made it to her destination safely, the crash reportedly raised concerns at the Secret Service and with Harris herself as agents are given extensive training before driving White House officials.

The Washington Post reports that the agents also failed to properly report the accident, dismissing it initially as a “mechanical failure” to “justify the delay in the motorcade’s arrival time in a messaging system used to alert the agency’s leaders.”

Guglielmi said agents later communicated the details of the incident to the agency’s leaders.

“Initial radio traffic indicated this was a mechanical failure and that was communicated to agency leadership by personnel supporting the motorcade movement,” Guglielmi told HuffPost. “After the protective movement was completed, leadership was verbally updated with additional pertinent facts that the vehicle struck a curb.”

Guglielmi told NBC News that agents handled the accident “exactly as they should.”

“We are proud of the detail,” Guglielmi said.
