The Junior League of Detroit, Inc. (JLD) has made the following grants through its in 2012 and 2013 through its Community Assistance Grants program:
Humble Design received $3,500 to purchase items that could not be secured by donations for homes for 20 families. Living Arts received $1,500 to provide Southwest Dance students opportunities to see professional dance performances and study with guest artists.
Green Living Science received $505 to purchase lessons and supplies to implement a comprehensive recycling program for three schools in Detroit, as well as a complimentary environmental education program.
The Detroit Children’s Choir received $1,500 to provide food, including breakfast, lunch and supper, during a day-long event in which the Detroit Children’s Choir children will take part in a unique opportunity to be involved in the Singers of United Lands Program.
Magic Carpet Theatre received $2,000 to provide funding to cover costumes/props and sound expenses for 10 assemblies at Detroit Public Schools which promote literacy by bringing top quality literature to life with interactive readers’ theater style.
PuppetART Theater received $1,100 to cover one performance, museum tour, and puppet making workshop for 70 students, teachers and chaperones.
Christ Child House received $2,000 to cover the skill development outings and in-house learning activities part of the Life Skills program.
Westside Cultural & Athletic Club received $4,000 to cover costs for their six-week summer Paving the Way program, including admissions to the Science Center and African American Museum; roller skating; bowling; supplies for first aid; educational table games; journals; arts and crafts; healthy snacks and field trip lunches and t-shirts for participants.
Jefferson East Business Association received $5,000 for program supplies, contractual artists, rental equipment and other costs associated with the Kidz Zone at the Jazzin’ on Jefferson 2013 which took place on June 15.
Pewabic Society, Inc. received $1,500.
Grant funds used for funding to purchase materials for their Pediatric Art – Fun with Clay program.
Detroit Sharks Youth Organization received $5,000 to purchase helmets and chin straps for a new youth football program in the Osborn Community on the east side.
Arts & Scraps received $2,960 to provide training and eight kits to each of seven centers operated by the Detroit Recreation Department in the 2013 summer session.
Barnabas Inc. received $2,000 to purchase woodworking supplies and equipment for their Mentoring and Lifeskills Program.
And the Mercy Education Project received $2,750 to purchase a laptop security cart for use in its Tutorial and Academic Support programs.
“We are proud to be able to support so many great local non-profits who are focused on providing valuable services for our community’s families,” said Therese Bellaimey, JLD president. “The Community Assistance Grants allow the JLD to extend our helping hand even further into the community, gain some wonderful partners and continue providing opportunities for deserving kids and their parents.”
The Junior League of Detroit distributes grants through its Community Assistance Grants program on a quarterly basis. Eligible organizations must have an office(s) in Wayne County and provide services within Wayne County, or have 75 percent of their clients residing in Wayne County and must provide services to improve the health and welfare of children. The JLD’s Community Assistance Grants program supports the JLD’s efforts to participate in community-basted collaborative partnerships that work to broaden the educational, cultural, recreational, and health opportunities for children living in Wayne county and promote volunteerism.
