The Michigan Political Leadership Program (MPLP) began at Michigan State University in 1992 with 24 Fellows. It has since grown to more than 600 graduates, more than half of them serving in elected or appointed positions.
Michigan’s MPLP graduates include a former mayor of Detroit, a county executive, tribal leaders, a former state House Speaker and 11 members of the state Senate and House of Representatives. Scores are at work in village, township, city, corporate and state agency and department leadership roles.
“MPLP is recognized nationally for its excellence,” says Douglas B. Roberts, Ph.D., director of the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research, MPLP’s campus home. IPPSR is known for its outstanding training programs, Public Policy Forums and survey research in MSU’s College of Social Science.
Selected applicants will be interviewed based on written application and letters of recommendation. Interviews take place during October and November with new fellowships awarded in December.
MPLP Fellowships stretch from February through November, wrapping weekend training sessions into 10 months of training. The curriculum ranges from hands-on to specialized tours and exercises incorporating personal leadership, public policy process and analysis, media and campaigns.
The training includes team and coalition-building activities taught by MPLP faculty including elected leaders, political activists, MSU, media and business professionals.
The sessions conclude with winter graduation featuring two nationally known speakers at a popular annual dinner and breakfast – known as the state’s largest multipartisan events.
Each Fellowship is valued at approximately $12,000, supported by MSU with significant grant funding from the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation of Midland and generous contributions from Michigan associations, corporations, MPLP alumni and individuals.
Accepted Fellows, however, are asked to pay a $1,000 administrative fee.
