James Craig Fighting to Stay in Michigan Gubernatorial Race After Signature Issues

Former Detroit Police Chief James Craig, who retired last June, is running against Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer this year — even after major signature issues that could stop him from going any further in the race, FOX 2 reported.

According to the article, the Michigan Bureau of Elections found some major discrepancies in the Republican race for governor, leaving room to possibly cut several candidates from running the GOP race for submitting invalid signatures.

Craig was found to be among them for failing to submit enough signatures, per a recommendation from the Michigan Bureau of Elections, according to the article.

“I’m a fighter, always been a fighter. Michigan wants something different. I know, everyone else knows, I was the GOP candidate that would have upset the incumbent,” Craig, who has no plans of giving up, told FOX 2 in the article.

Initially considered the top candidate for the nomination, now, Craig and four other candidates for Michigan governor may be up for disqualification instead of joining the primary race. Others include Perry Johnson, Michael Markey, Michael Brown, and Donna Brandenburg who also did not get enough valid signatures.

According to the bureau, Craig submitted over 9,000 fraudulent signatures. Perry Johnson, a self-proclaimed ‘quality guru’ was also popular in the polls yet had roughly 9,400 signatures tossed, per the article.

FOX 2 reported that because he was ahead of the polls that Craig was targeted from the start.

“I’m a threat to the Democrat party. I’m also a threat to my other Republican opponents,” he said in the article, before commenting that he thinks “shenanigans” were a major factor, although he could not cite how.

Craig said last year that he initially wanted to run because people want something different in politics.

“They want bold leadership; leaders that are ethical and that are transparent.”
