Issa Rae is joining Barbie for an onscreen adventure!

The Insecure creator was named as one of the most recent additions to the upcoming movie about the iconic doll, People exclusively reported. Issa, along with Michael Cera were officially added to the film’s cast which includes Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken. America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, and Will Ferrell are all listed in the official cast.

According to People, production for the film has already started in the UK. Oscar-nominee Greta Gerwig is directing, while Robbie is producing in addition to starring in the movie.

While the movie’s plot is not yet known, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Ferrell will play the CEO of a toy company. Robbie told the outlet in December 2020 that she wants to challenge people’s expectations of the film.

“The name itself, people immediately have an idea of, ‘Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,’ but our goal is to be like, ‘Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different –– the thing you didn’t know you wanted,'” she said at the time.

Barbie is set to be in theaters next year.
