In an exciting development for the American Black Film Festival (ABFF), award-winning writer, actor, and producer Issa Rae has been named the Creative Director for its 2024 edition. Rae, 38, will be joining hands with the festival’s organization to meticulously curate the event’s upcoming program. The festival is scheduled to take place from June 12 – 16, 2024 in Miami Beach.
ABFF co-founders and producers, Nicole and Jeff Friday, shared their sentiments regarding Rae’s contribution to the Black entertainment community, which led them to this pivotal decision. Their statement, as reported by Variety, reads: “Throughout the course of her career, Issa Rae has made an indelible impact within the entertainment ecosystem ranging from her wide array of roles – in front of and behind the camera – to her fierce advocacy for equitable representation and opportunities for Black creatives. We couldn’t think of a better partner to help us continue to embody the ABFF mission of showcasing Black talent — and discovering and amplifying new voices.”
Notably, Rae isn’t a new face to the ABFF community. Last year, she served as the festival’s ambassador and provided sneak peeks into the past two seasons of her TV show, Rap Sh!t, at the same venue. During the festival’s 2022 opening ceremony, the star of the critically-acclaimed show, Insecure, praised the festival’s unwavering commitment to artists of color. Speaking to Variety, Rae commented, “There’s no other festival highlighting us in this way, highlighting our film, highlighting our television shows, and it’s in an elegant way. That’s what I admire so much about this particular festival — it’s so intentional. Even thinking about the awards that they do later, ABFF as a brand is so solid, and I feel proud of having my work showcased here.”
Rae’s transition to the role of Creative Director is greeted with immense enthusiasm, not only from the festival but also from Rae herself. She reminisced on her connection with the festival and expressed her anticipation for what’s to come. Speaking to Variety, Rae said, “As one of the first major festivals to showcase my work, ABFF continues to elevate Black creatives from the ground up. I’m excited to join its co-founders and producers.”
Given Rae’s illustrious career and the ethos of the ABFF, the 2024 edition is eagerly anticipated, promising a festival that further uplifts and celebrates the diverse talent within the Black community.
