Is Ben Carson crazy or just bored?

Ben-CarsonTo be frank, I don’t know what kind of game Ben Carson is playing. I would love to say the man is crazy, but then there’s that other side of his brain where he performs as a brilliant neurosurgeon.

I wonder what happens inside this man’s head when Ben Carson the politician meets Ben Carson the neurosurgeon? Does it hurt?

And is he really running for President of the United States? Maybe. I’m not even sure of that anymore. I’m beginning to wonder if maybe the real deal here is that Carson is just plain bored, kind of like how an astronaut feels after he’s come back from the moon. Because after you’ve seen Earth from that far away, and how small it really is in relation to the rest of the cosmos, how do you come back and do a regular job with any real enthusiasm?

Just because you’re good at something doesn’t mean it’s what you want to do forever. Even if you’re one of the best. The problem here seems to be that since Carson knows how to do neurosurgery, something you have to be smart to know how to do, he has convinced himself that he must therefore be smart enough to lead the most powerful nation on Earth. Hey, he’s a quick study, right? Just spout off some statistics, spice it up with some crazy s—, and you’re good to go.

Not that this would excuse why Carson would say something as ridiculous (again) as he did recently when he boldly proclaimed on live TV that a Muslim should not be allowed to be elected to the presidency of the United States because it’s against the Constitution or some crap. Here’s what he told Chuck Todd on Sunday when he appeared on Meet the Press:

“I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that.”

Carson apparently thinks that if the United States allowed a Muslim to be president it would be antithetical to the Constitution. Naturally he didn’t reference any specific part of the Constitution that would back up this claim because, well, I guess certain neurosurgeons don’t feel they need to explain themselves to mere mortals. Even when they are discoursing on subjects way above their pay grade.

Because why bother making sense? Trump is the ringleader of foolish, but pretty much all of the Republican candidates have gone out of their way to distinguish themselves as ridiculous. Namely because sanity doesn’t make the news anymore. Sanity is boring. But shout out that you love dwarf-tossing in the moonlight, and suddenly you’re a media star.

It must be tiring, this race to the bottom, when the bottom keeps getting farther and farther away…
