Investigation in Pontiac Family’s Death Leads to Deputy Stepping Down

After the tragic passing of a 35-year-old Pontiac mother and her two boys, three and 9, who froze to death, an Oakland County Sheriff’s deputy is under investigation after the office released a timeline of the case some are saying could have been prevented, FOX 2 Detroit reported.“I wanted to really examine what happened in totality,” said Sheriff Michael Bouchard in a previous FOX 2 Detroit article.

An investigation resulted in an Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputy resigning.

The investigation, according to the Sheriff’s office, was completed, and the deputy at the center of the investigation resigned on January 22. The Sheriff’s office had no additional information to share Sunday night, according to a FOX 2 Detroit article.

On January 18, two days after Monica Cannady, 35, Kyle Milton, 9, and Malik Milton, 3, were discovered dead in a field in Pontiac, Sheriff Michael Bouchard released a timeline of events.

“I wanted a deeper dive that would potentially find ways to prevent such a tragedy in the future,” Bouchard said on January 18. “I ordered a complete review of all calls, radio traffic, a canvas of the neighborhood and any potential interactions with Monica Latrice Cannady and her children.”

According to the timeline, there were no calls to the sheriff’s office about the family on Saturday or Sunday, but deputies had contacted Cannady and offered her assistance.

The first encounter occurred on Friday at 1 p.m., when the sheriff’s office received a call reporting Cannady and her three children had stopped on Mill Street in Pontiac seeking assistance. Deputies used a drone to search for the family, and within 10 minutes of receiving the call, a deputy found her and her three children.
