According to Quincy Jones, who produced Michael Jackson’s most successful and most celebrated albums — “Thriller,” “Bad” and “Off the Wall” — a huge amount of money has been made on those albums since Jackson’s passing in June 2009, as well as from the “This Is It” documentary film.
The movie alone took in more than $260 million at the box office worldwide. But Jones says he has not been receiving royalty payments, and after exhausting all other avenues, decided to sue the Michael Jackson estate, his close friendship with the late superstar notwithstanding.
The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, seeks at least $20 million in damages. That breaks down to $10 million for each of the two master contracts Jones says were breached in several ways under an agreement between MJJ Productions and Sony. According to Jones’ attorney, Henry Gradstein, “Quincy has been frustrated with these matters for a number of years, and felt he was not making any progress and needed to take more formal action.” Jones’ charges have been challenged by an attorney for the Jackson estate.
