Important Things You Can Do To Prevent The Spread Of Coronavirus

On March 10, two cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) were confirmed in the State of Michigan. Since then, Mayor Mike Duggan and Governor Gretchen Whitmer have taken preventative steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19. During a March 12 press conference, Mayor Mike Duggan stated that the spread of COVID in Detroit is “inevitable,” and it could show up “in a matter of days.” While programs such as Coronavirus Water Restart Plan are in place for Detroit residents, here’s some information from the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention that you can apply to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Don’t spread false information:

  • Chinese Americans aren’t more likely to get COVID-19 and spread it to others. Anyone can get COVID-19, regardless of ethnicity.

Know the signs and symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath

Seek medical advice if you:

  • Develop symptoms and been in proximity with someone known to have COVID-19 or if you stay in or have recently been in a region with an ongoing spread of COVID-19.

Preventative measures:

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, specifically after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing; going to the bathroom; and before eating or preparing food.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Stay home if you’re sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

Stay Informed:

  • Continue to monitor local and national news outlets for information regarding COVID-19. The World Health Organization and Centers For Disease Control and Prevention have the most up-to-date information regarding COVID-19.
