I-94 Bridge rebuild to move into second phase

I 94

Work shifts to northbound lanes, traffic restored to southbound lanes
DETROIT — As earlier announced by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), M-1 RAIL, in conjunction with MDOT, will be closing a section of I-94 in Detroit this weekend between I-75 and M-10 (Lodge Freeway). The closure will begin at 9 p.m. Friday, June 5, with all lanes of the freeway expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, June 8. The closure will mark the halfway point of the I-94 bridge rebuild, enabling crews to restore vehicular traffic to the southbound lanes and to shift construction work to the northbound lanes of the Woodward Avenue overpass bridge.

During the closure, westbound I-94 motorists will be directed to southbound I-75 (Chrysler Freeway), then southbound I-75 (Fisher Freeway) to northbound M-10, and back onto westbound I-94. Eastbound I-94 motorists will be directed to southbound M-10, then southbound M-10 to northbound I-75, and back onto eastbound I-94.

About I-94 Bridge Reconstruction

Crews will reopen the southbound lanes of the I-94 Woodward Avenue overpass bridge, which have been closed to traffic since September of 2014, said Paul Childs, chief operating officer, M-1 RAIL.

“This construction shift marks the completion of a significant amount of work,” said Childs. “Essentially what we’re doing is opening the newly constructed western half of the bridge back to traffic, and flipping construction over to the east side. Not only do we get to open up the first portion of the completed I-94 overpass bridge, but we get to mark the halfway point in the bridge reconstruction process.”

Once the construction shift on the overpass is complete, all traffic will be transitioned to the southbound lanes of the bridge, with one lane of traffic moving in each direction with a center turn lane.

The I-94 Woodward Avenue overpass bridge was originally erected in 1955. Complete reconstruction is expected before 2016.
