A major hole opened up in front of a party store on the west side of Detroit, which unveiled a cracked pavement that fell several feet below, according to a report from www.fox2detroit.com.
The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) said in the article that it “has secured the sinkhole, located near Goddard and Dearing, which is just south of the Davison Freeway.”
The DWSD said the hole was due to a leak that came up in the six-inch water main that is over a hundred years old. As water from the leak got bigger, it tore away the soil base underneath the street — the pavement caved in, the article added.
The department said in the article that the break did not cause any service outage nearby, and that is why the department was not notified of the sinkhole until it had become evident until Monday.
It was first alerted to them by the public who took pictures of the hole, the article added.
If you see a flooded street or cave-in, please do not drive in the area for your safety. Use the Improve Detroit app or call DWSD at 313-267-8000 to report the issue.
