House Explosion Rocks West Side Detroit Neighborhood

DETROIT (WWJ) – A home on Detroit’s west side is barely standing following an explosion Sunday evening.

WWJ’s Ron Dewey, reporting from the scene, says it’s amazing the house — on Plainview between Joy and Tireman — is still standing after the explosion, which happened just before 6:00 p.m. The blast took out the back of the house, the front walls, a side wall, and caused some minor damage to a neighboring house.
A man in his 60s, who was at the home and the only person living there, sustained 2nd degree burns.

DTE Energy Spokesman Alejandro Bodipo-Memba says their crews, along with fire officials, are investigating the blast.

“We did preliminary testing, and found that there was no indication of any equipment malfunction, nor were there any leaks in the area,” Bodipo-Memba told WWJ Newsradio 950. “Our preliminary tests suggest that our equipment was in good working order. We’ll continue to work with investigators to determine the final cause. Until that time, we’ll continue to work and find out what actually transpired.”

Investigators say the explosion does not appear to be suspicious.
